"Fifteen
years ago I won 2nd Prize in the Kathleen Ferrier Competition. At the
awards ceremony, one of the judges casually observed that, as a bass,
I had 20 years to wait before reaching vocal maturity. That same year,
I began my studies at the NOS. In the circumstances, it seemed as good
a way as any of passing time...
I couldn't have guessed how good a way it would prove to be. My fellow
students and I were the recipients of superb vocal and launguage coaching,
of invaluable lessons in stagecraft, masterclasses from top singers
and directors, and a platform on which to show what we could do, or
what we might be capable of doing, even if it might take one of us 20
years to get there!
