Doreen Curran
mezzo Doreen
Curran was born in Derry and studied at the Dublin Institute of Technology
College of Music with Anne Marie O’Sullivan where she obtained
a 1st honours degree and gold medal. After finishing a postgraduate
at the Royal Northern College of Music she went to study at the National
Opera Studio, London.
In 1995 she was the winner of the Dame Joan Sutherland award in the
Veronica Dunne International Competition, in 1997 she was a winner at
the Bellini Festival in Sicily and was awarded the German Radio Prize
at the Belvedere International singing competitioin in Vienna. In 1998
she was the winner of the RTE Irish Young Singer of the Future and the
West Belfast Classical Bursary.
She has performed with the National Symphony and Concert Orchestra of
Ireland, the Ulster Orchestra, Irish Chamber Orchestra and the Liverpool
Philharmonic Orchestra.
At the RNCM she sang the role of Meg in Verdi’s Falstaff and Polina
in Tchaikovsky’s Queen of Spades. Doreen has sung the role of
Dido in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas for Lyric Opera Dublin at the
National Concert Hall Dublin, Lismore County Waterford and Broomhill
Opera, Zoe La Fiamma by Respighi, Wexford Festival, Lola Cavalleria
Rusticana by Macagni, Mercedes Carmen by Bizet, Glyndebourne Touring
Opera and for ATAO Opera Tenerife, Cherubino Le nozze di Figaro by Mozart
for Savoy Opera and Garsington Opera, Kate Pinkerton Madame Butterfly
by Puccini for Opera Project, Kate Pirates of Penzance for ENO, Ciesca
Gianni Schichi by Puccini and Second Lady Die Zauberflote by Mozart
for Opera Ireland. Most recent opera engagements include Clione Penelope
by Faure, Wexford Festival Opera and Ernestina L’occassione fa
il Ladro by Rossini in the Wexford Opera scenes,, Ottavia L’incornazione
di Poppea by Monteverdi, OTC.
Future engagements include Dorabella Cosi fan Tutte, Holland Park and
a reprise of the role of Ottavia for Buxton and Aldeburgh Festivals.
