Shaun
Dixon tenor
New
Zealand born, Shaun has been singing since the age of nine. Before coming
to London in 2005, Shaun worked as a professional singer throughout New
Zealand for four years performing regularly in concert, opera, and for
television
Shaun has just completed
a PGDip (opera) at the Benjamin Britten International Opera School,
RCM, London with Ryland Davies being supported by the Irene Hansen and
Charles Branchini Awards.
He also has a Bachelor of Music from Auckland University in New Zealand
where he was a Pears-Britten award scholar.
He has also had
the rare opportunity of studying privately with Luciano Pavarotti in
Italy with whom he stayed for 5 months.
Shaun has peformed
as a soloist with every major orchestra in New Zealand including the
Auckland Philharmonia, Christchurch Symphony and New Zealand Symphony
Orchestra. Some major highlights have included major outdoor events
of up to 150,00 audience and concerts such as the “Lakeside”concerts
in Rotorua , "Symphony under the Stars" in Auckland , “NBR
Westpac Stadium spectacular” which was broadcast on national television,
"Night at the Opera" with Dame Malvina major and “Carmen
and the Musicals” with Sally Burgess.
Shauns Opera experience
has included two years chorus with NBR NZ opera, the Role of Bellarmino
for the World premiere of the Opera "Galileo" by John Rimmer
, Rodolfo in La Boheme, Nirenus in Giulio Cesare , The Sailor in Dido
and Aeneas , Frederic in Lakme , Borsa in Rigoletto, Arbace in Idomeneo
, Gonzalve in L’Heure Espagnole and Alfred in Die Fledermaus for
BBIOS, RCM London . This last role was particularly well received with
one reviewer stating: “Shaun Dixon’s wonderfully Dotty Alfred
furnished an appealing tenor sound that would certainly be on my shopping
list” (Opera Now, March/April 2006). Shaun also performed the
role of ‘the Student’ in ‘The Nightengale and the
Rose’ (a premiere opera by Oliver Rudland) at the RCM. Shaun will
debut with BYO in September as Lenski in their production of Eugene
Onegin.
Oratorio has included the Tenor soloist for Bachs’ St Matthew
Passion, Schuberts’ Mass in G, Beethoven Mass in C, Verdis Requiem,
Andrew-Loyd Weber Requiem and Handels Messiah.
Shaun
has had much success as a recitalist including a nationwide tour where
one reviewer stated, “..Everywhere an uninhibited, emotional verismo
that half-gasps its way through beautifully turned words and sets the
audience cheering”….”melting moments that carried
you heavenwards” (New Zealand Herald).
He has been broadcast on radio and television and featured regularly
on national television in New Zealand since 1996 thanks to winning the
viewers vote on a live talent show called “Showcase”. He
is also the featured soloist for the sound track to the movie ‘NO.2’
(Numero Films Ltd) released 2006. Shaun was also guest artist on the
'Hayley Westenra' album, which was number one on the New Zealand charts
for six weeks May/June 2001 and whom he also toured with throughout
New Zealand and in Australia. Shaun has appeared regularly as guest
artist for major corporate events such as the "NBR 2002 Arts awards"
and the "Louis Vuitton Cup 20th Anniversary dinner 2003"and
has performed the National Anthem for the All Blacks vs Lions and England
rugby matches.
