Andrew Griffiths repetiteur

Andrew Griffiths is a member of the Jette Parker Young Artist Programme at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, where he works as a conductor and répétiteur. He began his musical training as a Quirister and Scholar at Winchester College, and studied music as a Choral Exhibitioner at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, graduating with distinction and several University prizes. Following his conducting studies with Martyn Brabbins at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, he won the Scottish Opera / RSAMD Joint Fellowship, supported by the Musicians Benevolent Fund. He subsequently trained at the National Opera Studio, supported by the Friends of Covent Garden, Scottish Opera Endowment Trust and MBF.

Andrew has conducted Philip Glass' 1000 Airplanes on the Roof for Paragon Ensemble Scotland, performances of Handel's Flavio and Amadigi for Early Opera Company, and worked as assistant conductor at Batignano and for British Youth Opera. At Scottish Opera he worked on Bluebeard's Castle, Erwartung, Fidelio, Semele and Tosca, and at the RSAMD Acis and Galatea, Dido and Aeneas, Falstaff, Idomeneo, Le Nozze di Figaro, L'incoronazione di Poppea and Judith Weir's The Vanishing Bridegroom. Other work includes The Coronation of Poppea for Opera Theatre Company, and celeste on broadcasts and recordings with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.

Andrew was a participant in the 2005 Orkney Conducting Course, leading repertoire sessions with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. An experienced choral conductor, he was Musical Director of Glasgow Chamber Choir (2004-5), directing a James MacMillan programme in the presence of the composer, and has worked as Acting Precentor of Gonville and Caius College Choir. Andrew is also a former Principal Viola of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, and sings professionally with early music vocal ensemble Stile Antico, and at the church of St Bartholomew the Great, Smithfield.

During his first season at the Royal Opera House, Andrew conducted La Serva Padrona in the Linbury Studio, scenes by Massenet and Mascagni in the Young Artist Summer Concert, and worked on La Finta Giardiniera, Carmen, Gianni Schicchi, L'heure espagnole, Stiffelio and Into the Woods. In the 2007-8 season, he will conduct Rita in the Linbury Studio, and work on Der Ring des Nibelungen, La Traviata, The Minotaur, Simon Boccanegra, Ariadne auf Naxos and La bohème.
