George
von Bergen baritone British baritone George von Bergen completed
a Bachelor of Music degree at Bristol University in 2001, followed by
post-graduate opera studies at the Royal Academy of Music under David
Maxwell-Anderson and Audrey Hyland. Awards include winner of the 2007
Royal Overseas League singing competition, the 2005 Major Van Someren
Godfrey English Song prize, winner of the John Lewis award and the David
Richards Memorial Prize.
Opera roles include Tarquinius in The rape of Lucretia at RAO,
the title role of Gianni Schicchi at RAO, the title role of Eugene
Onegin for British Youth Opera, Germont père in La traviata at Clonter Opera, Teucer in Rameau’s Dardanus, Argante
in Rinaldo and Chao Sun in Judith Weir’s A night at
the Chinese Opera for RAO, Nick Shadow in The Rake’s Progress
at Dartington, Simeon in L’enfant prodigue and Aeneas in
Dido and Aeneas.
On the recital and concert platform George von Bergen has performed extensively
in Britain, Germany and France. Oratorio performances include Bach St
John Passion, Puccini Messa di Gloria, Rossini Petite
Messe Solenelle, Fauré Requiem, and Bach Nun
Danket Alle Gott with the OAE. He has worked with Sir John Tomlinson,
Alan Opie, Dame Kiri te Kanawa, Dennis O’Neil, Robert Tear, Thomas
Hemsley and Malcolm Martineau.
Plans include performances as Edward in Elizabeth Maconchy’s The
Sofa (Independent Opera) and the title role of Don Giovanni (Clonter
Opera), plus Elijah with the Aurelian Ensemble. George will be
starting at the National Opera studio in September 2007.
