Susan Boyd mezzo
Born in Northern Ireland, Susan graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama Opera course in 2007. Prior to this Susan studied at the Royal Northern College of Music (2000- 2005).
Susan’s roles include Dido (Dido and Aeneas -RNCM) La Suore Zelatrice (Suor Angelica -RNCM) Tisbe (La Cenerentola –RNCM / The Ryedale Festival) Iolanthe (Iolanthe – Gawsworth Hall) Porporina (Gassman’s L’Opera Seria -Batignano Festival, Italy) Cendrillon (Cendrillon –RSAMD/Scottish Opera Orchestra at Glasgow’s Theatre Royal/Edinburgh Festival Theatre, 2006) Stewardess (Flight–RSAMD) Conception (L’Heure Espagnole –RSAMD/ Scottish Opera Orchestra/ Theatre Royal/ E.F.T.). Most recently Susan sang the role of Nancy (Albert Herring –RSAMD, 2007).
Susan is equally comfortable on the concert and oratorio platform. She has performed in concert with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (opera gala, 2006 /concert performance of Grieg’s Peer Gynt, 2007). She has given a BBC lunch time recital in Belfast and has recorded for BBC Radio Scotland (Scotland’s Music) and for BBC Television ( The Birth of British Music). In August 2006 Susan sang in the closing concert of the Edinburgh Festival (Leherbube -Wagner’s Die Meistersinger, Usher Hall). She has performed Elgar’s Sea Pictures with the Kelvin Ensemble and Edinburgh Chamber Orchestra in Glasgow and Edinburgh, February 2007.
In April 2005 she was selected as a finalist in the 11th Belfast Classical Music Bursaries competition at the Belfast Waterfront Hall, winning the Ireland Funds Award and the Audience Prize. In 2004 Susan was a recipient of an MBF Maidment Scholarship. At the RSAMD she won the Ye Cronies Opera Prize and the Margaret Dick Award. In 2007 Susan won a Yamaha Vocal Scholarship and was selected as a finalist in the Clonter Opera Prize and the Bruce Miller Prize.
After leaving the RSAMD Susan sang in the Bayreuth Festival Chorus and the Glyndebourne On Tour chorus. Most recently, Susan covered the title role in Rossini’s Cenerentola (Scottish Opera Go Round) and covered the role of Dorabella in Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte (Garsington Opera). Her Studies for 2008/09 will be supported by the Countess of Munster Musical Trust and the Sybil Tutton Awards.
Susan will join the National Opera Studio in September 2008.
