David Butt Philip tenor

David was born and brought up in Wells in Somerset and began his musical training as a chorister at Peterborough Cathedral. He was a choral scholar at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral and a Lay Clerk at Manchester Cathedral. He is also a founder member and associate music director of the Liverpool Schola Cantorum.

He studied at the RNCM with Peter Alexander Wilson and on the postgraduate opera course at the RAM with Glenville Hargreaves, graduating with a distinction and a DipRAM.
Whilst studying he was awarded the Bessie Cronshaw Song Cycle Prize, the John Cameron Prize for Lieder, the Elena Gerhardt Lieder Prize, the Richard Lewis/Jean Shanks Award and the Edwin Samuel Dove Prize for special merit during studentship. David was also a member of the RNCM University Challenge team in 2003 and a Samling Foundation Scholar in 2009.

Concert performances include Carmina Burana at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, Brahms Ein deutsches Requiem with Eastbourne Choral Society, The Dream of Gerontius in Chester Cathedral, Mahler’s Das Klagende Lied with Vladimir Jurowski and the LPO at the Royal Festival Hall and recitals at the Wigmore Hall with the Solstice Quartet and the pianist Simon Lane.

Operatic roles include Junius (The Rape of Lucretia), Ebn Hakia (Iolanta) and Boris
(Paradise Moscow) for Royal Academy Opera, Mr Gedge (Albert Herring/British Youth Opera), Marcello (La Bohème/Opera Up Close), Tony (The Airman’s Tale/Yorke Trust), Mr Gobineau (The Medium/N.I Opera) and Albert in the world premiere of Stefan Weisman’s Fade for Second Movement Opera.

In 2010 David joined the Glyndebourne Chorus. Whilst at Glyndebourne he understudied the roles of the Keeper of the Madhouse (The Rake’s Progress) and Vogelgesang (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg). He was a Jerwood Young Artist for the 2011 season and was the winner of the 2011 John Christie Award. He returns to Glyndebourne in autumn 2011 to understudy the role of Rodolfo (La Bohème).

 Since 2010 David has been studying privately with Ryland Davies. He joins the National Opera Studio in September 2011, where he is supported by the Glyndebourne New Generation Fund and a Sybil Tutton Award administered by the Musicians Benevolent Fund.
