Cárthaigh Quill tenor
Born in Dublin, Ireland, Cárthaigh was a vice principal of a primary school before turning his attention to singing. In 2005 Cárthaigh left teaching and studied under Emmanuel Lawler at Dublin’s DIT Conservatory of Music. He then moved to Cardiff’s Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama where he has just completed his postgraduate studies. Here he studied with curent teacher Eric Roberts and was coached by Angela Livingstone.
In 2007 Cárthaigh played the role of Monostatos in Mozart’s Magic Flute for BYO and also covered The Mayor in Benjamin Britten’s Albert Herring. In June 2008 he played Rinnucio in Gianni Schicchi and Mozart in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Mozart and Salieri for Northern Ireland Opera Fringe.
In 2006 Cárthaigh was selected to take part in the Wexford Opera Young Artists Programme where he studied under Dennis O’Neill and in 2007 New Devon Opera selected him to take part in their Jose Cura Project. Cárthaigh has also had the pleasure of working with John Fisher of WNO, Adrian Thompson, Ingrid Surgenor, Graham Clarke, Donald Maxwell and Phillip Langridge.
As a concert performer Cárthaigh has completed a tour of North Wales Music Clubs as well as being a regular solo act with many of the Male and Female Voice Choirs of Wales. He also took part in a series of concerts at the home of composer William Walton on the Island of Ischia. He has also participated in many opera gala concerts in Ireland and Wales where he has sung repetoire ranging from Vaughan-Williams to Verdi. He has performed at many of Ireland’s leading venues and has appeared on radio and television singing solo work.
Cárthaigh has won many prizes and bursaries including The O’ Mara Cup for male voice at The Siemens Feis Ceol and the Sir Gerriant Evans bursary at the RWCMD.
