Alexander Sprague tenor
Alexander studied with Ryland Davies and Iain Ledingham on the Opera Course at The Royal Academy of Music where he was supported by the Josephine Baker Trust. He was the recipient of the Grant McCann Prize and the prestigious Kohn Bach Foundation scholarship; performing as the tenor soloist in the Academy’s Bach Cantata series which included performances alongside John Butt and Rachel Podger. In September 2011 he takes up a place at the National Opera Studio.
Alexander’s operatic experience is ever increasing, most recently he understudied Don Ottavio Don Giovanni (Longborough Festival Opera) and Monostatos The Magic Flute (Garsington) and was the recipient of The Haskell Family Foundation Scholarship to perform scenes as Ferrando Cosi Fan Tutte at The Britten Pears Young Artist Programme. Upcoming performances include Agenore Il re Pastore (Classical Opera Company) and Male Chorus The Rape of Lucretia (BYO).
As a member of Royal Academy Opera, Alexander has performed the roles Ferrando Cosi Fan Tutte, Demo Il Giasone, The Mayor Albert Herring, Don Eusebio L’Occassione fa il Ladro and Apollo Semele, working with conductors including Sir Colin Davis, the late Sir Charles Mackerras, Dr Jane Glover and directors John Copley and John Cox.
Alexander has made numerous solo appearances across the country on the oratorio stage, his most recent roles include Mozart Requiem in St Martin in the Fields, London, and with the Northern Sinfonia in Durham Cathedral, Evangelist St. John Passion in Bristol Cathedral, St. John Passion arias in Lincoln Cathedral, Jenkins The Armed Man with Guernsey Symphony Orchestra, a tour of Handel Messiah with the Bath Philharmonia and extracts from Handel Alexander’s Feast at The London Handel Festival directed by Laurence Cummings.
Also a consort singer, Alexander regularly appears with The Monteverdi Choir (for which he has also performed as a soloist) under Sir John Eliot Gardiner, touring across the UK, Europe and USA, at venues including Carnegie Hall, New York and Opera Comique, Paris.
