Joakim
Berg bass baritone
Joakim was
born in Sweden in 1970. Before he started singing opera and classical
music, he was a singer/songwriter in the folk/jazz field, an actor/musician
with a theatre group in Stockholm, and was European Youth Champion in
dinghy sailing (Laser Class).
In
1994, Joakim started his classical singing studies with Hans Gertz in
Stockholm. In 1997, he went to the Stockholm University of Opera, studying
under Solwig Grippe, and graduating in summer 2001. He has recently completed
the 2001/2002 course at the National Opera Studio, supported by The Friends
of Covent Garden and a Nelly Groner Bursary.
Operatic
roles at University included: Arkel, Pelleas et Melisande; Elviro
and Ariodate, Xerxes; Sarastro and Der erster priester, Die
Zauberflöte; Don Alfonso, Così fan tutte; Leporello,
Don Giovanni; Figaro, Le nozze di Figaro; Tonio and Prologue,
I Pagliacci; and Filippo II, Don Carlo.
Joakim
sang the role of Kentaur in the world premiere of contemporary Swedish
opera, Solitario, and, at the Royal Opera, Stockholm, he sang Figaro,
Le nozze di Figaro, for the Opera School Showcase in 2000. In his
final examination production, Joakim sang the role of Der Tot in Viktor
Ullman's Der Kaiser von Atlantis.
For
the past two summers, Joakim has been a member of the choir at the Drottningholmstheatre,
from whom, in 1999, he received a generous scholarship. At Confidencen,
Stockholm, roles have included Leporello, Don Giovanni.
