Oliver
Gooch Repetiteur
British
born conductor, Oliver Gooch, has recently completed
two years as Assistant Conductor on the Young Artists
Programme at the Royal Opera House, a post created specially
for him. There he made his debut with the Orchestra
of the Royal Opera House on the main stage in 2006.
During his time at the ROH, he acted as Assistant Conductor
and Music Staff for much of the canon including Peter
Grimes, Werther, La Rondine,
Madama Butterfly, Turandot, La
Boheme, Macbeth, Bartered Bride,
La Traviata, Il re pastore, Tosca,
Bluebeard's Castle/Ewartung, L'heure espagnol/Gianni
Schicchi, Il Trovatore. He has also assisted
for the Royal Ballet, most recently on The Rite
of Spring.
As
founding
Artistic Director of Opera East Productions, he has
seen the company grow to what the press observed - "an
opera company deserving national significance".
Alongside OEP's regular touring work, it has made various
commissions including Heart of Darkness (Tarik
O'Regan) in collaboration with American Opera Project/Opera
Genesis and Children of Fire in collaboration with Darwin
200/Natural History Museum.
As
Musical Director of Iford Festival Opera, he has conducted
Lucia di Lammermoor, Rusalka and The
Rake's Progress and future plans with them include
A Midsummer Night's Dream in 2009. Other recent
work includes Die Zauberflote (Glyndebourne
Festival), Le nozze di Figaro (Glyndebourne
on Tour), The Rake's Progress (OEP). L'elisir
d'amore (Stanley Hall Opera), Maskarade
(GSMD), The Bear (Edinburgh), The Little
Sweep (Jubilee Hall, Aldeburgh)
He
was educated at Magdalene College, Cambridge and subsequently
trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and
the National Opera Studio. Oliver studied conducting
at the Tanglewood Festival under Robert Spano and Seiji
Ozawa, and was subsequently nominated for the prestigious
Rolex/Mentor Protégé Arts Initiative in
Geneva, under Sir Colin Davis. As Principal Conductor
of the Pepys Ensemble he has recently performed Bach
cantatas with Emma Kirkby.
Forthcoming
engagements include Albert Herring (Glyndebourne
on Tour), Mahler's Fourth Symphony (Philharmonia
Orchestra), performances of Samuel Arnold's Inkle
and Yarico to celebrate the abolition of slavery,
and collaborations with Opera Genesis at the Royal Opera
House.
Oliver
is currently a Clore Fellow, a one year progamme designed
to nurture a new generation of cultural leaders.
