Michael was born on Merseyside and began his singing career in the Metropolitan Cathedral Choir in Liverpool, where he sang for eleven years. He then moved to Manchester to study singing at the Royal Northern College of Music with Patrick McGuigan. Whilst at the RNCM, Michael took part in various opera productions and concerts, including the role of Fredric in Le Fanu's The Story of Mary O'Neill, which was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. His oratorio repertoire includes St. John Passion, St. Matthew Passion, Messiah, The Creation, Elijah, Samson and the Requiems of Mozart, Brahms, Faure, Durufle. He has also performed at the Halifax Festival, and the Oxford Festival of Contemporary Music where he sang the world premieres of Skempton's Oh Life and Pitt's Out of the Depths. Recently, Michael has been singing with Glyndebourne Festival Opera covering the roles of Starveling, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and John, The Last Supper. He was recently awarded the Erich Vietheer Memorial Award. Michael completed the 2001/2002 course at the National Opera Studio supported by Welsh National Opera. |
