Emily Gottlieb, Chief Executive
Chief Executive’s Welcome
We are delighted to announce our 2016/17 Young Artists. They have an intensive nine months of professional training ahead of them starting in September, during which they will have a full coaching programme as well as plenty of opportunities for our audiences to hear them perform. For the first time ever we will be hosted by all three of our regional partner companies, performing in residency with full orchestras at Opera North, Scottish Opera and Welsh National Opera.
David Pountney will direct our Contemporary Scenes in London in May 2017; we welcome Brindley Sherratt as artist-in-residence, and are looking forward to the second of our new mini-residencies with the Royal Opera House. Languages and stagecraft will feature prominently throughout the year, and we are introducing an Artist Resilience strand to the programme, which will include health and wellbeing, performance psychology and business acumen. Our new Opera Roots series, introduced only last year, will continue, giving artists an opportunity to work alongside our staff in putting together all elements of a programme, from marketing to producing and fundraising.
It is very important that today’s young artists are prepared for the increasing demands of the operatic profession, and at the Studio we take great care to equip our singers and répétiteurs with not only the vocal, musical and dramatic skills that they need to differentiate themselves on the competitive stages of the world’s opera houses, but also stamina, resilience and a collegiate nature. Opera is, at its best, the most collaborative of art forms, and we strive to give our young artists the sense of being a part of something bigger than themselves, as well as the broad set of tools that they need in order to thrive in such a wonderful, daunting, exciting and constantly changing world.
We of course extend an equally warm welcome to all our audiences, sponsors, followers and associates, and hope that we will see you all at one of our many events next year.
