Course Description

This is a five-day course for postgraduate level or professional singers of all voice types who want to progress through an intensive burst of concentrated learning. This comprehensive course will focus on vocal and musical coaching, practical stagecraft and interpretation, movement, text, language and personal and professional resilience. It will feature provocative, stimulating and honest interactive discussions on wide-ranging aspects of a singer’s development and the opera profession, which may include topics such as auditions, self-promotion, fundraising, casting and contracts. You will learn tips, tricks and techniques from industry professionals, helping to build your singer’s toolkit. You will be an enthusiastic, motivated and committed singer, bringing two or three pre-prepared arias to work on and share. Be prepared for an intensive and fulfilling time. 

 

The course will include at least the following:

  • Text and interpretation masterclasses with the course leaders;
  • Stagecraft and communication with the course leaders;
  • An interpretation masterclass with Mark Shanahan;
  • One-to-one coaching with Michael Pollock;
  • Movement with Karen Halliday;
  • Language coaching (depending on your repertoire);
  • Rehearsal time with a pianist to prepare your arias;
  • An in-house performance as a culmination of the course to which you can invite friends, singing teachers and family;
  • Written feedback from our coaching staff;
  • Daily lunchtime talks and career guidance sessions with NOS staff;
  • Access to the NOS Opera Library;
  • Access to our suite of practice rooms.

Eligibility:

  • You must have, or be studying for, a postgraduate-level degree or diploma in singing, OR
  • Be singing professionally

Please note each participant will need to organise their own accommodation during the course.
