Course Description

The Opera Intro Summer School is designed for young singers who are keen to learn more about what it takes to perform opera. You may be studying or about to study at undergraduate or postgraduate level, however you will not have studied on a postgraduate opera course. The course is led by Dearbhla Collins, a core member of our artistic team, who is a successful international song recital pianist and vocal coach, performing regularly in the Wigmore Hall and festivals in Ireland and Europe and is the senior vocal coach at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Dublin. Over six days, you will participate in individual and ensemble coaching sessions addressing both musical and vocal matters, workshops on stagecraft and movement, and production rehearsals with fellow course members, building to a final performance on the Saturday to share with your friends and family. You will also gain valuable tips and advice on careers in opera and singing, building to a portfolio of work and communicating through your CV and other media, the use of social media and how to present yourself with confidence.

The course will include at least the following:

  • One-to-one coaching with Dearbhla Collins and Jeremy Silver on aria and scene repertoire;
  • Vocal and music coaching with leading NOS coaches;
  • Rehearsals of scenes and arias with director Victoria Newlyn;
  • Acting classes with Victoria Newlyn;
  • Movement with Karen Halliday;
  • An in-house performance as a culmination of the course to which you can invite friends, singing teachers and family;
  • Career guidance and CV improvement sessions with NOS staff;
  • Feedback from our coaching staff to take you forward to your next stage of training;
  • Rehearsal time with a pianist to prepare your repertoire;
  • Language coaching as suitable for the repertoire being studied;
  • Access to the NOS Opera Library;
  • Access to our suite of practice rooms.

Number of places: 15
