Peter Espenhahn was born in 1944 and, after school, read Economics and Law at Cambridge.  He qualified as a chartered accountant and later joined a London merchant bank with which he remained until 1998.  Subsequently he became chairman of several private companies but retiring in 2014.

Peter's chief interests are opera, reading and sailing.  Having seen his first opera in 1957, he attends performances regularly in Britain and round the world and has now seen approaching 1800 performances. Although his tastes are fairly catholic, he travels particularly to see Wagner and Britten and regularly attends the Bayreuth and Aix-en-Provence Festivals.

He was a board member of ENO for a period from 1999 and is now a trustee of the Enniskillen International Becket Festival, the London Friends of the Aix Festival and the National Opera Studio.
