As part of the UK-Russia Year of Music, Associate Artists of National Opera Studio will be visiting Moscow between 20 and 27 November 2019, bringing with them music form two distinctive periods of British music, taken from the reigns of Elizabeth I (1558-1603) and Elizabeth II (1952-present).  

Cultural life at the court of Elizabeth I was incredibly rich. Songs, masques and plays were written in abundance and were commonly included as part the life of the nobility at all kinds of celebrations and anniversaries. Outside the court, new plays were written in abundance which also included music and song. Religious music was increasingly inventive even though England was staunchly and defensively Protestant at that time. Personal and private songs of the time; love songs, songs of admiration and empathy will be included in the first part of the programme.

The second part of The Two Queen Elizabeths will feature new music written for the young singers of the National Opera Studio in 2018. These works are examples of creative and collaborative ways of developing contemporary music for voice. The singers - who were able to choose the theme of the aria, based on a personal experience, a dream or an ambition - worked closely in a team with the composer, librettist and pianist. The result was a series of incredible musical settings of deeply-felt personal themes.
