Counter-tenor JungKwon Jang was born in Buyeo, South Korea and studied at Yonsei University in Seoul. He later graduated with an MA in Voice and ‘Konzertexamen’ from the University of Music and Performing Arts, Hamburg under the tutelage of Professor Mark Tucker, with whom he still studies. JungKwon has already had some notable operatic engagements both in Germany and the UK, including Lepidus Octavia (Keiser) for the Innsbruck Alte Music Festival and Ruggiero Alcina for the Staatsoper, Hamburg. He has been a soloist with orchestras including Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg (cond. GMD Marcus Bosch), the London Handel Festival Orchestra (cond. Laurence Cummings) and Philharmonisches Orchester Würzburg (cond. Enrico Calesso), and this summer performed at the Halle Handel-Festspiele. He has won numerous awards, including the Berenberg Stiftung Kulturpreis 2017, the Special Prize at Vienna’s 8th European Opera Competition, First Prize at the Korea-Germany Brahms Association Concours, 3rd Prize at the 8th European Singing Competition DEBUT in Germany, 1st Prize at the 26th Competition of the Elise Meyer Foundation in Germany, 3rd prize & Special Prize at the 16th Maritim Musikpreis in Germany and the Audience Prize at the 2017 London Handel Festival Singing Competition. In 2016, he also had successes at the Osaka International Singing Competition, the International KS Ljuba Welitsch Singing Competition and the “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” International Singing Competition. He has recently broadcast as a Young Artist for NDR Kultur. JungKwon is grateful to have been the recipient of a scholarship from the Berenberg Bank Foundation.
