Scottish soprano Monica McGhee is a graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and the Royal College of Music, where she graduated with Distinction from the Masters’ in Vocal Performance course. She is based in London and studies with NOS alumna Marie McLaughlin.
Operatic appearances include Frasquita (cover) Scottish Opera, Leila Les pêcheurs de perles Opera Bohemia, Mimi (La Boheme) with Kensington Symphony Orchestra and Opera D’Amore, Giannetta/Adina cover L’elisir d’amore for Haddo House and Gontran Une education manquée for Pop-Up Opera. Monica has been involved in many new operas, most recently in 2016 she created the role of the Wise Woman in the world premiere of The Glass Knight at Saffron Hall.
Her concert work has taken her to some of the UK’s most prestigious venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Birmingham Symphony Hall, Bridgewater Hall, Barbican, Glasgow City Halls and Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. She was a finalist in the 2016 Susan Chilcott Award and the 2011 and 2014 Les Azuriales Opera Competition.
Recently, Monica sang with The Royal Opera House in Japan and in Sweeney Todd with Bergen Nasjonale Opera.
Monica is a Drake Calleja Scholar and holds a Musicians' Company Award and a Sybil Tutton Award. Her time at the National Opera Studio is generously supported by The Robertson Trust, The Cross Trust, Scottish International Education Trust and the James Caird Travelling Scholarship.
