Our next alum recital features 2022/23 alum Sarah Chae.

South Korean soprano Sarah Chae has performed in a diverse range of traditional and contemporary repertoires. Her 2025 season features the role of Frasquita in Carmen at the Immling Festival. In 2024, she debuted as the Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute and sang the title role in Balfe’s Satanella at the Erzgebirgische Theater in Germany, alongside performing Lesbia in Bampton Classical Opera’s L’isola d’Alcina. In 2023, she appeared as Calloandra in the UK premiere of Salieri’s La fiera di Venezia with Bampton Classical Opera and covered Violetta in La Traviata with Oxford Opera. Her broadcast experience includes an appearance on South Korea’s RNA Channel programme, Kim Sung-kyeol’s Music Canvas.

As a Young Artist with the National Opera Studio (NOS) in London, Sarah collaborated with the English National Opera, Opera North, Welsh National Opera, and Scottish Opera. Her repertoire during this period included various roles such as The younger sister in Dove’s The Pig, Norina (Don Pasquale), Nanetta (Falstaff), and Zerbinetta (Ariadne auf Naxos). Her previous operatic experience includes performing as Vixen in The Cunning Little Vixen, Coraline in Turnage’s Coraline at Staatstheater Saarbrücken, and Musetta in La Bohème. Her concert portfolio includes soprano solos in Mendelssohn’s Lobgesang and Bach’s St Matthew Passion.

Sarah received the Richard Wagner Scholarship, 3rd prize at the III European Competition in Torino, and a special prize at the 16th International Vocal Competition Gabriela Beňačková. She completed her Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, and Konzertexamen at the Hochschule für Musik Saar in Germany. She also studied at the Luigi Cherubini Conservatorio in Florence as part of the Erasmus programme.
