We are excited to introduce the 2026/27 cohort of Young Artists at the National Opera Studio. Drawn from an outstanding international field, this year’s singers and repetiteurs bring a remarkable breadth of artistry and experience. Over the next nine months, they will take part in an intensive programme of coaching in vocal and musical development, language and diction, stagecraft, movement, and career preparation. Their training is enriched by wide-ranging performance opportunities, from masterclasses and studio projects to public concerts, livestreams, and residencies with our partner opera companies. Each Young Artist receives fully funded training, a monthly performance stipend, and targeted support to help them thrive throughout the year.

Ellie Forrester
Ellie Forrester
Ellie Forrester is a Scottish soprano in the final year of her Master’s degree at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), where she studies under the tutelage of Mary Plazas. During her time at the RNCM, she has been a finalist in the Frederic Cox Award, received Second Prize in the Joyce and Michael Kennedy Award for the Singing of Strauss, and was a recipient of the Dame Eva Turner Award.
Her operatic roles include Fox Goldenmane The Cunning Little Vixen (RNCM Opera), Fata Morgana L’amour des trois oranges (RNCM Opera), La Contessa Le nozze di Figaro (Kleine Opera), Miss Wingrave Owen Wingrave (RNCM Opera), and Asphodèle L’étoile (RNCM Opera). She has also performed scenes as Elettra Idomeneo; Arabella Arabella; Penelope Rich Gloriana; Fiordiligi Così fan tutte; Arminda La finta giardiniera; Venere Ascanio in Alba; and Aunt Norris Mansfield Park.
This summer, Ellie joins Garsington Opera as an Alvarez Emerging Artist, covering Marianne Leitmetzerin Der Rosenkavalier (Strauss) and performing in the chorus for both Der Rosenkavalier and Verdi’s La traviata. Concert highlights include the soprano solo in Mahler Symphony No. 2 at the Bridgewater Hall and Queen/Second Harlot in Handel Solomon.

Jessica Lawley
Jessica Lawley is a soprano from Derbyshire under the tutelage of Anne Mason. She recently completed her MA at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama Opera School (RWCMD), where she was awarded the Phillipa and David Seligman Award for Excellence. Jessica previously completed her BMus and MPerf at the Royal College of Music (RCM), and is also a Samling Artist.
Jessica was a 2024 Alvarez Young Artist at Garsington Opera, where she performed First Bridesmaid and covered Barbarina Le nozze di Figaro, as well as performing Barbarina in the Opera First production. In 2026 she will cover Female Chorus The Rape of Lucretia (Hampstead Garden Opera) and perform Servilia La clemenza di Tito (Buxton International Festival).
Other operatic roles include Monica The Medium (RWCMD); Donna Elvira Don Giovanni (RWCMD); Donna Ximena Don Giovanni Tenorio (Gazzaniga) (RCM); Charity Taylor Barnum’s Bird (Larsen) (RCM); and Frou-Frou Die lustige Witwe (RCM). Felicity Tomkins
Felicity Tomkins
New Zealand–British soprano Felicity Tomkins was the winner of the 100th Melbourne Opera Herald Sun Aria (2024), the Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Scholarship (2024), and the Lockwood New Zealand Aria (2023).
Felicity is a graduate of the Artist Diploma Opera Programme at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM, 2023). She has been a resident New Zealand Opera Studio Artist, an AIMS Graz Opernstudio Artist, and is an alumna of the University of Waikato (MMus/BMus(Hons)/BSc) and the New Zealand Opera School.
Before joining the 2026/27 National Opera Studio Young Artist Programme, this season Felicity will make her mainstage company debut with New Zealand Opera, performing Contessa Almaviva Le nozze di Figaro. Her further operatic experience includes Annina La traviata (Auckland Philharmonia/NZO); Cio-Cio-San Madama Butterfly (Auckland Opera Studio); Military Wife/Soprano 1 The Knock (Cincinnati Opera); Jeannette L’amant anonyme; and Madame Lidoine Dialogues des Carmélites (CCM Opera).
In concert, Felicity has performed Handel Messiah (Auckland Choral), Bacalov Misa Tango (Bach Musica), Mahler Symphony No. 4 (CCM), Rossini Petite messe solennelle (Cantando Choir), and Bach Mass in B minor (Hamilton Civic Choir). Her further competition accolades include being a Semi-Finalist in the 43rd International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition (2025); a competitor in the 13th Nadia and Lili Boulanger International Voice–Piano Competition with pianist Sooyeon Baik (2025); a Finalist for the Elizabeth Connell Prize (2023); Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition Kentucky District Winner (2022/23); and Dame Malvina Major Foundation Lexus Song Quest Runner-Up (2022).

Clover Kayne
Clover Kayne
London-born mezzo-soprano Clover Kayne is praised for her flexible, warm tone and magnetic stage presence. She completed her Advanced Diploma with Royal Academy Opera, studying with Kate Paterson and Jonathan Papp, and graduated with the Regency Award. During her studies, she was runner-up in the Richard Lewis Award and a finalist in the Royal Over-Seas League Annual Music Competition. While at the Royal Academy of Music, she was a member of the Academy Song Circle and was supported by the Carr-Gregory Award, the Hannah Horowitz Award, and the Opera Awards Foundation. She is a Josephine Baker Trust Artist.
In 2024 she was selected as a Young Artist at the Georg Solti Accademia. From autumn 2026 she will train as a Young Artist at the National Opera Studio (NOS), London, and joins Garsington Opera as an Alvarez Emerging Artist for the 2026 season.
Her operatic roles include Hänsel Hänsel und Gretel (Royal Academy Opera); Ariodante Ariodante (Royal Academy Opera); Ottavia L’incoronazione di Poppea (Hampstead Garden Opera); Florence Pike Albert Herring (Royal Academy Opera); and the Fox The Cunning Little Vixen (Royal Academy Opera). Carmen Lázaro
Carmen Lázaro is a Spanish mezzo-soprano. In 2025, she completed her postgraduate studies at the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg, where she studied with Mario Díaz.
In 2024, she earned a Master’s degree in Operatic Performance at the Conservatorio Superior de Música Joaquín Rodrigo, studying singing with Gloria Fabuel. She also holds an undergraduate degree in singing with First Class Honours, as well as a degree in viola, from the same institution.
She has received masterclasses from distinguished artists including Elīna Garanča, Mariella Devia, Dolora Zajick, Elena Pankratova, Ramón Vargas, Ernesto Palacio, Laura Polverelli, and Solveig Kringleborn.
Her operatic roles include Nicklausse Les contes d’Hoffmann; L’enfant L’enfant et les sortilèges; Contessa Melibea Il viaggio a Reims; Enrico Elisabetta, regina d’Inghilterra (Den Norske Opera & Ballet); Rosina Il barbiere di Siviglia (Teatro de la Maestranza); Armelinde Cendrillon (Palau de Les Arts Reina Sofía); and Romeo I Capuleti e i Montecchi (Universität Mozarteum Salzburg).
In 2023, she joined the “Crescendo” programme at Teatro Real. She is part of the 2025/26 Wigmore French Song Exchange at Wigmore Hall. She has also been selected for the prestigious programme Le Jardin des Voix and will tour internationally with Les Arts Florissants.

Alexandria Moon
British mezzo-soprano Alexandria Moon is a member of the Opera Studio at the Royal College of Music in London and is the Lotti Masterson Scholar, supported by the John Nickson and Simon Rew Scholarship in memory of Sir Peter Jones, studying with Mary Nelson. Her studies have been generously supported by the Opera Awards Bursary, Drake Calleja Trust, Countess of Munster Trust, and the Josephine Baker Trust. Alexandria is an Opera Prelude Young Artist for 2026 and was a Garsington Alvarez Emerging Artist for 2025, where she received the Simon Sandbach Award after debuting as Masha The Queen of Spades and covering Eduige Rodelinda, performing the role in their OperaFirst production. She recently performed in the spring tour of Scottish Opera’s Opera on Your Doorstep: The Office Party. Other role highlights include Lucretia The Rape of Lucretia (British Youth Opera), Concepción L’heure espagnole (Royal College of Music), and Marcellina Le nozze di Figaro (Royal College of Music).
Upcoming engagements include debuting Flora La traviata and covering Octavian for Garsington Opera’s 2026 season, as well as performing Dinah Trouble in Tahiti at Opera Holland Park in collaboration with Opera Prelude. She looks forward to joining the National Opera Studio for 2026/27.

Mkhanyiseli Dyantyi
Mkhanyiseli Kwanele Dyantyi is a South African tenor born in the Eastern Cape. He completed both his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Opera UCT in Cape Town, graduating with distinction in 2025 with a Postgraduate Diploma in Music.
Operatic experience includes Alfredo La traviata (Opera UCT in collaboration with Cape Town Opera), Ildemaro Dalinda (Opera UCT), and Natanaël Les contes d’Hoffmann (Opera UCT). In September 2024, he was cast in the lead role for the world stage premiere of Donizetti’s long‑lost opera Dalinda.
Recent concert highlights include performing Rodolfo in scenes from La bohème (Opera UCT). He has also appeared at major South African events such as Starlight Classics and Suidoosterfees.
Future engagements include performing Manrico Il trovatore (Opera UCT in collaboration with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra).

Ridge Ponini
Proud Cook Islands tenor Ridge Ponini holds a Bachelor of Music with Honours from the University of Otago under Judy Bellingham, and a Master of Music in Advanced Opera Study from the University of Waikato as a 2024–25 Resident Artist at Te Pae Kōkako: The Aotearoa New Zealand Opera Studio (TANZOS), studying with Nikki Li Hartliep. In 2023, he was a Studio Artist with New Zealand Opera and attended the New Zealand Opera School for four consecutive years.
Operatic highlights include roles in John Drummond’s War Hero (Opera Otago), chorus Don Giovanni (Opera Otago), and chorus appearances in semi‑staged performances of Fidelio and Beethoven Symphony No. 9 (New Zealand Opera). He toured nationally as the Prince La bella dormente nel bosco (Respighi) for Opera in Schools (New Zealand Opera), and portrayed Alexander the Great Il re pastore (Mozart) for Days Bay Opera.
His awards include the Sydney Eisteddfod International Opera Scholarship, the Iosefa Enari Opera Award (Creative New Zealand), the Spirit of the School Award, the Freemasons Foundation Prize, the Opera School Runner-Up Award, and the University of Waikato Blues Award.
Concert highlights include Beethoven Symphony No. 9 with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and Mendelssohn Lobgesang (Hymn of Praise) with Bach Musica NZ Inc., as well as upcoming soloist appearances in Mozart Requiem and Christopher Tin The Shiver on the Sky with Wellington Orchestra and the Orpheus Choir.

Ambrose Connolly
Ambrose Connolly
Ambrose Connolly is a lyric baritone who graduated from University College London with a degree in Russian and French before studying in Russia at the Kazan State Conservatoire under the tutelage of Ekaterina Laider. He was the winner of the 2020 Serebranie Rosi International Opera Singing Prize. Ambrose has more recently completed a Master’s in Advanced Vocal Studies at the Wales International Academy of Voice in Cardiff, under the direction of Dennis O’Neill. He was one of eight young singers selected for the Glyndebourne Academy in 2021.
Notable roles include Guglielmo Così fan tutte (Cardiff Opera), Germont La traviata (North Wales Opera Studio), and Eugene Onegin Eugene Onegin (HGO and Bath Opera). Ambrose has appeared as a soloist for numerous choral societies both in the UK and Europe, including as a soloist for La misa del valle with the Real Orquesta Sinfónica de Sevilla, baritone soloist for Elgar Coronation Ode (Trowbridge Symphony Orchestra), Brahms Ein deutsches Requiem with the Gower Choral Society, and Vaughan Williams Five Mystical Songs with the Benson Choral Society.
Before joining the National Opera Studio as a Young Artist, Ambrose spent two seasons touring with Diva Opera across South Africa, Europe, and the UK, where he sang Baron Douphol La traviata, Fiorello Il barbiere di Siviglia, and Figaro Le nozze di Figaro. He will join Garsington Opera as an Alvarez Emerging Artist for this summer’s festival. Ambrose is taught by Russell Smythe.

Sonny Fielding
Sonny Fielding is a lyric baritone from Liverpool, in his final year of study at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama Opera School, where he studies with Robert Dean. He has a particular affinity for early music and a strong commitment to new and contemporary opera.
Recent highlights include performing the title role in Britten’s Owen Wingrave at Guildhall. Sonny is also a Samling Artist, reflecting his dedication to art song and collaborative music‑making. He regularly works with fellow musicians and composers to create and perform new work and is especially drawn to working with living composers.
His operatic credits include the Hausierer Der Wald; Tito and Valerio Lucrezia; Dr Blind Die Fledermaus; Aristotle Alexander and the Tree; and the Puppet Master Strings of Rebellion. He has also performed scenes from Gloriana, Don Pasquale, Manon, Maria Stuarda, and L’elisir d’amore.
In 2026, Sonny joins the chorus of Glyndebourne Festival Opera for Britten’s Billy Budd.

Joshua McCullough
Scottish‑Maltese bass Joshua McCullough is an MA (Hons) Music graduate from the University of Glasgow and recently completed his MMus Vocal Performance studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
Joshua is a Samling Artist and was a young artist with Genesis Sixteen and Dunedin Consort. Recent opera credits include Quince A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Don Prudenzio Il viaggio a Reims (Wexford Festival Opera); the Notary Gianni Schicchi (Grange Park Opera); Hobson Peter Grimes (British Youth Opera); and Sarastro Die Zauberflöte, Le Roi Cendrillon, and Neptune Idomeneo (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland).
Joshua is in regular demand around the UK as a low bass, and also for international bookings and recordings with groups such as the Dunedin Consort, Mancunium Consort, Chamber Choir Ireland, and KANTOS. Upcoming in 2026, Joshua will join the Dunedin Consort for their annual performances of J. S. Bach’s St Matthew Passion in early April as Judas/Peter/Pilate, will sing Father Trulove/Keeper of the Madhouse The Rake’s Progress (Stravinsky) with British Youth Opera, and looks forward to joining the Alvarez Emerging Artist Programme at Garsington Opera this summer.

Arianna Congedi
Arianna Congedi
Italian repetiteur Arianna Congedi graduated from the Zurich University of the Arts with a Master’s degree in Piano Pedagogy and Vocal Accompaniment, as well as an Advanced Certificate in Conducting. She is currently a repetiteur on the opera course at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.
She is a 2024 bursary recipient of the International Opera Awards Foundation and a 2024 Répétiteur Fellow of the Georg Solti Accademia. In 2023, she was awarded a scholarship by the Hirschmann Foundation Switzerland in recognition of outstanding academic achievement and social engagement.
Arianna recently made her conducting debut with the Hastings Philharmonic Orchestra, leading performances of Don Giovanni and Teseo. She will be assistant conductor for Opera Makers (Guildhall School of Music & Drama) and is on the 2026 Royal Ballet and Opera conductor observership scheme.
Her work as repetiteur includes Der Wald and Lucrezia (Guildhall School of Music & Drama); Alcina (Saluzzo Opera Academy); Le nozze di Figaro, Carmen, and Dido and Aeneas (Zurich University of the Arts); Bohuslav Martinů’s Larmes du couteau and Alexandre bis (Theater Gessnerallee Zürich); and Die Fledermaus (Lyric Opera Studio Weimar).

Jem Herbert
Jem Herbert is an Australian pianist, conductor, and composer. In 2026 he concluded his tenure as Young Artist Répétiteur at Opera Australia, where he assisted conductors, played production rehearsals, performed with the Opera Australia Orchestra, accompanied masterclasses and coachings, and appeared in public concerts at the Sydney Opera House.
At Opera Australia he assisted Alexander Briger, Chad Kelly, and Erina Yashima in productions and concert performances including the New Year’s Eve Gala and the Gilbert and Sullivan Gala. He played rehearsals for Carmen and Madama Butterfly, undertook orchestral keyboard work, and fulfilled backstage music staff duties for Madama Butterfly and Turandot. In 2025 he completed professional development at Lyric Opera of Chicago, shadowing Chorus Master and Head of Music Michael Black.
Jem completed a Graduate Diploma in Opera Performance (Répétiteur) at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, acting as répétiteur and conductor for Hänsel und Gretel and répétiteur for The Old Maid and the Thief. He holds a Bachelor of Music (Piano Performance) from the University of Melbourne, including an exchange year at Durham University (UK). His compositions include chamber, choral, and theatrical works, notably the operetta Mageia: A Musical Fable, commissioned by Trinity College, University of Melbourne.

Alicia Hernández Huebra
Spanish repetiteur Alicia Hernández Huebra specialises in opera and vocal repertoire. She is currently completing her Artist Diploma at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama (GSMD) as a répétiteur on the Opera Course, where she holds the Wolfgang Bruckner Scholarship.
She graduated from the Master’s in Piano Accompaniment at GSMD with Distinction, where she studied with Andrew West and was awarded the Sheriff’s Prize for outstanding academic achievement.
Alicia has accompanied masterclasses by Gerald Finley and Simon Keenlyside and worked as a studio accompanist for Yvonne Kenny. In 2023, she was appointed répétiteur for the Teatro Real Young Artist Programme “Crescendo” and, in 2025, participated in the Georg Solti Accademia for répétiteurs in Italy, working with Jonathan Papp, Anthony Legge, and James Vaughan.
Recent work includes repetiteur for Le nozze di Figaro (Berlin Opera Academy), Amahl and the Night Visitors (Teatro Real Junior), Autumn Opera Scenes (GSMD), and Owen Wingrave (GSMD). She is also frequently in demand as a collaborative pianist for recitals with singers.

Paul Mnatsakanov
Paul Mnatsakanov is an emerging American‑Russian‑Armenian pianist, collaborative pianist/répétiteur, historical keyboardist, and conductor. In his performances, he seeks to share an understanding of music as an art form rooted in meaning, storytelling, and emotion. His passion for opera and languages—he speaks English, Russian, French, and Italian fluently—deeply informs his playing.
He is currently in the second year of his postgraduate studies as a collaborative pianist at the Royal College of Music, studying with Prof. Vanessa Latarche, Seb Wybrew, and Caroline Dowdle, as well as organ with Charlie Andrews and conducting with Peter Stark. He also studies piano with Philippe Raskin at the Gulda School of Music in Vienna, Austria, and historical keyboards privately with Carole Cerasi.
Paul is a winner of multiple international piano competitions. He has performed in numerous London venues including Wigmore Hall, the Elgar Room at the Royal Albert Hall, and St George’s Hanover Square, as well as at other venues across England and Wales.
Paul has coached singers on a wide range of repertoire. From May to July 2025, he worked as Trainee Répétiteur at Garsington Opera on Beethoven’s Fidelio. For the 2026/27 season, he has been offered a place on the National Opera Studio Young Artist course in London.
