Michael Harper (1963-2025)

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Michael Harper. As a vocal coach at the National Opera Studio, Michael left an indelible mark on our community, inspiring all who had the privilege of working with him.

A globally renowned countertenor, he performed in opera and concerts across Europe, the US, and China, premiering works at the Royal Ballet and Opera’s Linbury Theatre and Clore Studio, Megaron (Athens), Biennale Danza (Venice), the China National Symphony Orchestra, Ballet Grand Théâtre de Genève, and the Institute for Contemporary Arts.

Beyond his remarkable performance career, Michael was a passionate advocate for music education, championing opportunities for children and young people from all backgrounds. He was a dedicated patron of our Diverse Voices programme, working tirelessly to ensure diversity and inclusivity in opera.

Michael’s humour and generosity enriched all the artists he worked with, and his legacy will live on in their voices. Our thoughts are with his family and all who were fortunate enough to know him.
