Soprano Sarah Seunghwa Chae, born in Seoul, Korea, is a Young Artist at the National Opera Studio, London. Previous roles include Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen (Vixen), Turnage’s Coraline (Coraline) at the Staatstheater Saarbrücken, Puccini’s La bohème (Musetta), Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia (Lucia) at the Saar University of Music, and Mendelssohn’s 2nd Symphony Lobgesang. In 2021, she performed at the Theater Trier as Amore in Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea.
Sarah was awarded a Wagner Stipendium Bayreuth in December 2019. Furthermore, she received the special award by Vesselina Kassarova for participating in a production at the State Opera Stara Zagora in the 2019/2020 season.
In 2021, she won 3rd prize in the III European Opera Competition in Torino. She began her studies at Saar University of Music, Saarbrücken with Prof. Yaron Windmüller in 2015. In 2018, she finished her Bachelors degree and graduated from the Masters programme in 2020.
During her studies, she successfully completed the Erasmus program at the Luigi Cherubini Conservatorio in Florence, Italy, studying with Prof. Donatella Debolini from 2019 to 2020. She participated in Masterclasses with Deborah Polaski, Mariella Devia, Sonia Franzese, Daniel Kotlinski, Vesselina Kasarova and Nikolay Handjiev.
Since April 2020, Sarah has been studying with Prof. Yaron Windmüller at the Hochschule für Musik in Saarbrücken to obtain her postgraduate ‘Konzertexamen’ degree
