General information

There is no upper age restriction for applying to the NOS. However, applicants are reminded that the Training Programme is very intensive and is intended to benefit extremely gifted singers and répétiteurs who are at the beginning of their professional careers. Although it is not a formal requirement, applicants are expected to have significant experience and to have been training, in some form, for a number of years.

The 2019-20 Training Programme is full-time and runs from September 2019 to June 2020.

Key dates for auditions and applications

  • Applications open on Monday 1 October 2018
  • Applications close at 11.59pm on Monday 11 February 2019
  • First Round auditions will take place from Friday 5 April 2019 to Sunday 7 April 2019.
  • Final Round auditions will take place on Wednesday 17 April 2019 and Thursday 18 April 2019.

Application form and references

To apply, you must download and complete an Application Form and an Equal Opportunities Monitoring form. Both of these forms should be returned by email to [email protected]. (If you need to post your application form, make sure you leave enough time for it to reach the National Opera Studio by the deadline.)

Your application form will ask you for the details of two referees. Your referees should be music or theatre professionals (for example, directors, agents, established singers, accompanists, heads of music colleges) but not your current or former piano teacher(s). We will only contact your referees if you are invited to a final round audition.

The application form will be available to download here from Monday 01 October 2018.

Deadline for applications: 11:59pm on Monday 11 February 2019.

Audition fee

As part of your application you will be required to pay an audition fee of £80. Once we have received your application form, we will get in touch with you to request payment of the fee. You will be able to pay over the phone using a debit or credit card, or you may complete a BACS transfer into the National Opera Studio’s account.

Audition allocation

All répétiteurs applying to the National Opera Studio are given a live First Round audition. Once you have applied and paid your audition fee, you will be allocated a First Round audition.

Cancellation and rescheduling

Should you need to cancel or reschedule your audition, you must do so by emailing [email protected] as soon as possible.

If you cancel your audition more than two weeks before your First Round audition date, the NOS will refund £50 of the application fee to allow for costs incurred through administrative time. The audition fee will be non-refundable after this time.

If you need to reschedule your audition, we will do our best to accommodate your request at no extra cost to you. However, please note that we cannot offer audition times outside of the audition dates stated. If it is impossible for us to reschedule your audition, you must either keep your original time or cancel, in which case the NOS will be under no obligation to refund your audition fee.

Audition structure and repertoire

The audition will take place at the National Opera Studio and will last between 30 and 45 minutes.

You will need to prepare two scenes from contrasting operas. Both scenes should involve at least two characters. You will be asked to play whilst singing in the vocal lines.

You will also be given an extract to sight-read and the opportunity to discuss your career plans with the panel.

If you are successful in the First Round audition, you will be notified within one week and invited to a Final Round audition, taking place in the week commencing 19th March 2018.

Feedback

Neither verbal nor written feedback will be given after the First Round. In the interest of fairness and owing to the high number of First Round auditions that take place, this is a rule which applies to all First Round auditionees, and we are unable to make any exceptions.

Written feedback will be offered to all unsuccessful Final Round auditionees within one calendar month of the results notification.

Eligibility

If you do not hold a valid UK or EU passport, you should be aware that the Home Office/UK Border Agency now has rigorous conditions that need to be met before the necessary visa will be issued. Without this, you will not be able to come to the NOS. See the visas page for further information.

It is vital that all applicants accepted onto our Training Programme have a good command of the English language. We reserve the right to request proof of your English proficiency and, if necessary, ask you to sit a test.

Funding and living in London

Young Artists do not pay fees to train at the National Opera Studio. The cost of training is generously covered by NOS donors, supporters and stakeholders. However, successful applicants will be expected to cover the cost of living in London for nine months during the Training Programme. As the Programme is full-time 5 days a week, it is very difficult for Young Artists to undertake regular paid employment. Your ability to undertake paid employment may also be affected by your residency status.

The NOS has a limited Bursary Fund which is available to those in need of financial assistance. Upon a formal offer of a place, NOS Chief Executive Emily Gottlieb will discuss eligibility.

We regret that we are unable to offer financial support for travel to and from NOS auditions.
