Who we are

Who we are

The National Opera Studio (NOS) exists to train talented young musicians to become the leading artists of their generation. We aim to make a significant contribution to the opera ecology and the wider creative and cultural life of the UK through the provision of top-quality professional training, and by our engagement and position in the sector.

From my regular visits to the National Opera Studio, is clear to me that the drive and energy of the artistic staff is feeding into the young artists who are thriving in this special environment. The work achieved here is extremely valuable and gives a unique groundwork for the young singers of the future.

What we do

At its core, the National Opera Studio provides intensive and bespoke professional training at the highest level for a small number of singers and repetiteurs each year, and prepares them for life on an international operatic stage. We work in partnership with not one, but six of the leading opera companies in the UK: English National Opera, Glyndebourne, Opera North, the Royal Opera House, Scottish Opera and Welsh National Opera. Our Young Artists are with us for nine months and undergo a rigorous programme that is individually designed around their particular vocal and developmental needs.

In addition to the tailored coaching programme, our Young Artists work closely with leading directors, conductors and opera orchestras to prepare opera scenes for public performance, as well as working with other artists who are leaders in their field. The intensity of the training programme is designed to create a working environment that reflects the professional opera world.

Analysis of our alumni and regular contact with our partner opera companies and industry professionals shows us that the time our young artists spend at the Studio often makes the single biggest difference to their future prospects as top-level solo artists. Many NOS-trained singers, such as Gerald Finley CBE, Susan Bullock CBE, Lesley Garrett CBE, Jean Rigby, Alice Coote and Joan Rodgers CBE, to name just a few, have gone on to build highly successful careers at an international level. Our repetiteurs are international festival directors, conductors, Artistic Directors, and are on the music and artistic staff of major companies in the UK and abroad.

The NOS also supports emerging talent. We provide short courses and other opportunities for emerging singers, repetiteurs, conductors, directors and stage managers. We work with local schools to identify and support young talent as well as offering our young artists the rewarding learning opportunities that working with children and young people can offer. We present public performances for the benefit of audiences in London and around the UK.

    The difference we make

Our core purpose is the development of talent. Young Artists undergo rigorous professional development programmes that are individually designed around their vocal and developmental needs. As we are not attached to one opera house, we are not subject to main stage activity and do not cast dependent on productions: we select young artists purely on merit.

  • Vision and mission

    Vision and mission

In partnership with the UK’s six leading opera companies we play a leadership role in the development of operatic talent for the resilience of the art form, through high-quality training, support and dialogue. Through our partnerships, we create world-class development opportunities for artists of exceptional promise and will become a resource for the sector.
